Terms of use
Test-period version. Zenyola is being tested with a closed group of invited people. It is free and nothing is charged. These terms say what stands today, without yet naming a territory or a legal entity: those are settled before Zenyola is offered publicly, and announced here.
Last updated: 19 September 2026
These terms govern the use of Zenyola during its test period: the browser extension, the website at zenyola.com and the service behind them, run by the people who build them ("Zenyola", "we"). By registering or using the extension you accept them. If you do not, do not use Zenyola.
1. What Zenyola is
Zenyola is an education service for people learning a language. It shows two subtitle tracks, synchronized and one over the other, on a video you are already watching on a video platform you already have access to: the language you are learning, and the language you read in. Over time it adds linguistic help on the dialogue, such as explanations of words and expressions, in the language you read in.
Zenyola is a way of studying with material you already have. It is not a source of that material.
2. Zenyola and the video platforms
Zenyola is independent of the video platforms it works with. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or otherwise connected to any of them. Their names, if any appear, belong to their owners.
To use Zenyola on a platform you need your own valid account with that platform, and you remain bound by that platform's terms. Zenyola:
- runs only in your browser, on the platform's pages, while you watch;
- reads the subtitle tracks the platform serves to your browser for the episode you are watching, and the position of the player, and presents those subtitles differently on your screen;
- does not access your platform account, your credentials, your profile or your watch history;
- does not download, record, copy or store video or audio, and does not circumvent any technical protection of the video;
- changes nothing in your platform account or settings.
You are responsible for using Zenyola in a way that respects the terms of the platform you use it on. If a platform's terms do not allow you to use browser extensions on its pages, do not use Zenyola there.
3. Your account
You register with an email address and sign in through a link we send to it. One account per person; the account is yours and not for sharing. Keep your sign-in links private: whoever opens one is signed in as you. You are responsible for what is done with your account until you sign out or delete it.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, after telling you why, unless the law forbids us to.
You may delete your account at any time from your account page. Deletion is immediate and removes everything that refers to you, as the privacy policy explains.
4. The learning library
When you watch an episode with Zenyola, the subtitle tracks the platform served to your browser are sent to our service and kept in a learning library. This section says what that is and what it is not.
What it is. A store of subtitle text and timings, kept once for everyone, used to align the two languages of a dialogue and, later, to analyse the language of that dialogue so that learners get explanations. It carries no record of who watched what: a track is not linked to any account. It holds text and timings only, never video, audio or images.
How it is served. A track from the library is shown only over the very episode it belongs to, to a viewer who is watching that episode on the platform with their own account. Zenyola does not make the library available as files, does not offer subtitle downloads, and does not show a track apart from the video it was made for.
What you may not do with it. You may not extract, copy, scrape or redistribute the library's content, or use Zenyola to obtain subtitle text for any purpose other than watching and studying the episode on the platform.
Rights holders. The text in the library belongs to its rights holders. If you hold rights in a title and want it withdrawn from the library, write to support@zenyola.com with the title and the basis of your request. We withdraw titles on request and keep a record of each withdrawal, without asking you to prove anything beyond the basis of your request.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use Zenyola to circumvent any technical measure or term of a video platform;
- use automated means to capture, harvest or download subtitle tracks, or to make requests to our service outside the ordinary use of the extension;
- interfere with the service, probe it, or try to access another person's account or data;
- resell, sublicense or offer Zenyola as part of another product without our written agreement;
- use Zenyola for anything unlawful.
6. The service, its availability, and changes
Zenyola is offered free of charge during its test period. Paid plans may come later; we will say so in the extension and on the site before anything is charged, and nothing you already have will be charged for without your agreement.
We can change, pause or withdraw any part of the service. In particular, the extension reads a configuration from us and will stop working on a platform when we switch it off, which we do when a platform changes in a way that would make the subtitles wrong or the page misbehave. When that happens the extension says so on screen.
We may release updates to the extension and require a minimum version to keep using the service.
7. Intellectual property
The Zenyola software, its design, its texts and its trademarks are ours or our licensors'. These terms give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the extension and the site for their intended purpose, and nothing more.
The subtitle text in the library belongs to its rights holders (section 4). Your account data is yours; the privacy policy says what we do with it.
Your learning data is yours. The words you save, your notes, your study results and, when the feature exists, your voice recordings remain yours. You give us a licence to host them, process them and show them back to you as study material, and to run and improve the study features with them; that licence is worldwide and royalty-free because it costs us nothing to give you back what you made, it lasts while you keep the data, and it ends when you delete it. We claim no ownership, we license your learning data to no one, and we do not train models on it — the privacy policy says what we do with data once it no longer names anyone, which is where our own measurements of what teaches well come from.
The study material Zenyola generates from a title — its analysis, explanations, cards and lessons — is made once for everyone and is ours or our licensors'; you may use it for your own learning and nothing more.
If you send us a problem report, a suggestion or other feedback, you allow us to use it to improve Zenyola without owing you anything for it.
8. No warranty
Zenyola is provided as is and as available. We do not promise that it will work with every title, every platform or every browser, that subtitles will always be aligned correctly, that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that explanations of language are complete or correct. A video platform can change at any time and stop Zenyola from working on it.
To the extent the law allows, we exclude every warranty not stated here, whether express or implied. Where you live there may be consumer warranties the law does not allow to be excluded: those stand, and nothing written here attempts to cut them down.
9. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, Zenyola and the people behind it are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or for loss of data, arising from the use of or the inability to use Zenyola. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, which during the test period is zero. Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited.
10. Termination
You can stop using Zenyola at any time by removing the extension and, if you wish, deleting your account. We can end your access if you break these terms. Sections 4, 7, 8, 9 and 12 survive termination.
11. Changes to these terms
When these terms change, the date at the top changes, and a change that affects your rights or obligations is announced in the extension or by email before it applies. Continuing to use Zenyola after that means you accept the new version.
12. Governing law and disputes
During the test period Zenyola is offered free to a closed group of invited people, and these terms name no governing law and no forum. Every mandatory consumer protection you enjoy where you live still stands, as does any right your own law gives you against us.
Before Zenyola is offered publicly or charges for anything, this section will name the governing law and the forum, and the change is announced to you as section 11 says before it applies.
13. Contact
support@zenyola.com. When Zenyola is offered publicly, this section will name who operates it and its address.
